Sarah Matous

She’s a force of nature in all the best ways: full of energy, imagination, big-picture thinking, and an uncanny ability to turn “what if” into “why not?”

BOARD - PRESIDENT, CHAIR

Sarah is a co-founder of the Zen Penguin Swim School and a natural community builder with a background in early childhood development, inclusive education, and—let’s be honest—the kind of comedic storytelling that leaves us crying with laughter.

A woman with blonde hair is in a car with a young fluffy brown and white puppy. The woman is wearing a gray sleeveless top and smiling slightly. The puppy appears curious and is looking towards her shoulder. The background is yellow.

Currently earning her master’s in Child Development from Evergreen State College, Sarah brings both deep knowledge and lived empathy to her work—especially when it comes to supporting neurodivergent children and helping them thrive through creativity, play, and sensory-informed connection.

She’s a force of nature: imaginative, grounded, and always thinking about what something could be. She’s constantly generating creative ideas—and just as quickly deflecting credit with complete humility. Her creativity isn’t loud; it’s generous, collaborative, and quietly powerful.

Sarah listens deeply, encourages often, and somehow keeps pace with even our most chaotic moments (without breaking a sweat). She leads with sensitivity, humor, and heart—and we are truly lucky to have her guiding this next chapter of Make Art PDX.
